![]() ![]() It looks like the 5900-series used the same hydraulically actuated system as the 5900 series so pay attention to what Matt and Paul have written. ![]() A new assembly ran $900 from Clausing, so be sure to check out that part of the system carefully. I have a 5914 that had a badly damaged motor pulley. I also put some notes in the Files section on how I did the VFD conversion. You might want to ask a question there on how to check out the vari-speed drive, I can't help you with that one, I took it out right away to put in the VFD as I need a very quiet machine. is a fair price if everything is functioning on the machine and the vari-speed drive is in good shape. That's what I did to my 5914 and I love it. ![]() That turns the lathe into a very quiet machine with automatic braking and controlled reversing. However, these lathes are very easy to convert to direct VFD drive if the vari-speed drive takes a dump. Even when the drive is working well, its pretty noisy, especially for a home shop lathe. There's some plastic bushings that if they get worn out, ruin some very expensive parts in the drive. The variable speed drives on the 5900/6900 lathes work well, but need to be maintained. These are good solid lathes, and many parts are still available from Clausing, not dirt cheap, but not way overpriced.
